Introduction
[0:05] In this video, I’ll show you how to install my Spaced Repetition app. I will make other videos to explain what “spaced repetition” is, why it is effective, and how to use my app.
Preparation
[0:05] Installing this app is more complicated than installing typical apps. This is because my app runs inside a Google app called “AppSheet” and because the data (that is, the vocabulary, definitions, and example sentences, etc. that you will use the app to study) are stored in a separate Google spreadsheet. In other words, it is made up of three parts: the app that I made, the spreadsheet that holds the data, and the AppSheet app that you download and use on your phone. In this video, I’ll explain how to prepare each of these three parts.
[0:05] The first two steps, which are copying my app and preparing your Google spreadsheet, are much easier to do on a computer than on a smart phone. Also, I recommend that you use the Google Chrome browser to do the tasks described in this video. If you are using another browser, there is a possibility your browser will not behave in the way that I describe here so please switch to the Chrome browser now.
[0:12] Next, I would like you to practice controlling this video player. You can pause and restart the video by clicking on this play button. In order to follow the steps described in this video, you will need to pause the video frequently. If you have trouble understanding a step explained in the video, you may need to go back and watch that part again. To go back or go forward, move your cursor over the seek bar and then click when you see the time that you would like to go to. Now, try clicking on this full screen button. You can click on the full-screen button at any time. The video will temporarily cover your entire screen but everything will return to normal if you click the full-screen button one more time.
[1:08] The next step is to move this browser window to the left side of your screen and the open another window. You may need to click on the maximize button in order to resize your window. Adjust the size of the window so that it is just about as wide as the video player and put it on the left side of you screen. Now, look at the blog archive and find “Installing My Spaced Repetition App.” Right-click on this link and choose “Open link in new window.” Then, put the new window you have just opened (which should have the same content as the first window) on the right-hand side of your screen and resize it so that it fills the remaining space. You will use the window on the left to view this video and the window on the right to perform the steps.
[2:09] The next thing I would like you to do is to learn how to find the words you that you are hearing in this video in the second window. Scroll down in the right-hand window until you see text in paragraphs. Notice that there is a time marking at the beginning of each paragraph. Now, stop this video to find the time you need to look for. Use the time shown at the beginning of each paragraph to help you find the text that I am reading now. If you have found the text I am reading now, you should be able to see that the text “Kirk Masden’s AppSheet Profile.” Right-click on the link and choose “Open link in new tab.” Generally speaking, when a link will take you to a new site, I think it’s a good idea to open it in a new tab because that will make it easy for you to return to the original site if you need to.
Copy my AppSheet app
[2:59] Now, you should be able to see my Spaced Repetition app in the window on the right side of the screen. Click on “See it in action.” Now click on “Copy this app.” If you are using AppSheet for the first time, you need to sign up for the free service now. First, click on the Google icon. If you will use this app in a course I am teaching you need to sign in with your “kumagaku.ac.jp” address. If you are not taking a class of mine you can sign in with any Google address that you like. Click on “Allow.”
[4:10] Now, click on “Copy this app” again. If you already have an older version of this app, I recommend that you change the name to that you can tell the difference between the two. You do not need to change the app name, however, if you are downloading it for the first time. Click on “Skip.”
[5:20] Click on “Behavior.” Then click on “Offline & Sync.” Turn “Delayed sync” and “Automatic updates” on. Click on “SAVE CHANGES.” Next, click on “Info” and then copy the “Short name” of your app. Finally, click on “Data” and then one of the “BROWSE” links you see.
Google sheets
[6:32] The “BROWSE” link you just clicked on took you to the Google sheet that contains the data for your app. When you first begin using my Spaced Repetition app, this speadsheet contains data (words, definitions, sentences, etc.) that I have prepared for you. From now on, however, you can add, delete, or edit data on this spreadsheet as you see fit. I’ll explain how to do that in another video.
[6:32] In the upper left-hand corner of the window, you should be able to see the name “W to D.” I recommend that you change the name of your sheet so that it is the same as the name of your app. To do this, select “W to D” and then paste the name of your app that you copied a minute or so ago. If you are using this app in a class that I teach, you need to share the sheet with me. Click on the “Share” button, which you should see in the upper right-hand corner of the window. Then type “masden” at mark “kumagaku.ac.jp” and click on “Send.”
On your phone
[6:32] Now you are finally ready to download the “AppSheet” add begin using my “Spaced Repetition” app inside it to study vocabulary on your phone. On an iPhone, open the “App Store” app, search for “AppSheet” and then download the app. You won’t need to add photos to use my Spaced Repetition app so it doesn’t matter whether you select “OK” or “Don’t Allow” here.
[6:50] On an Android phone, tap on “Play Store,” search for “AppSheet,” and then download it. I tapped “ACCEPT” here. It might be OK to change the settings before you tap “ACCEPT” but I haven’t tried that so I’m not sure.
[7:11] The next steps are the same on iPhones and Android phones. Open the app and then sign in with the same Google e-mail address that your used when you signed up for AppSheet on the computer. Click “Allow.” If you are using AppSheet for the first time, you should see the app your have just copied in the “App Gallery.” Tap on the icon to begin using your app.

はじめに
[0:05] この動画で私が作ったSpaced Repetitionというアプリのインストール方法を説明します。 「Spaced repetition」とは何か、どうして効果的か、そして私が作ったアプリをどう使うかを説明するための動画を別に作ります。
準備
[0:05] このアプリをインストールすることは通常のアプリをインストールことよりも複雑です。 なぜかといえば、私のアプリはGoogle社の「AppSheet」というアプリの中で動くもので、データ（単語や定義、例文など）はGoogle スプレッドシートの中で保管されるからです。 言い換えれば、三つの部分から構成されています。つまり、私が作ったアプリ、データを保管するスプレッドシート、そしてスマホで使うAppSheetというアプリです。 この動画でそれぞれの部分の準備方法を説明します。
[0:05] 最初の二つの手順、つまり私のアプリの複製とGoogleのスプレッドシートの準備は、スマホよりもパソコンで行う方がずっと楽です。 また、この動画で説明する作業を行うためにはGoogle Chromeのブラウザーを使うことをお勧めします。 他のブラウザーを使っているのであれば、ここで説明するように作動しない可能性がありますので、今からGoogle Chromeに切り替えてください。
[0:12] 次、このビデオ・フレーヤーの操作を練習してみてほしいと思います。 まず、この再生ボタンを押せば、動画を一時停止にしたり、再生を再開したりすることができます。 この動画で説明されている手順に従って作業を進めるためには、頻繁に動画を一時停止させる必要があります。 動画で説明されている手順がよく理解できない場合には、巻き戻して改めて見る必要が生じるかもしれません。 巻き戻し、または早送りをするには、カーソルをシークバーの上に動かして、希望の時間が見えたらクリックしてください。 次に、この全画面表示ボタンをクリックして見てください。 いつでもこの全画面表示ボタンをクリックすることができます。 動画は一時的に画面全体を覆うが、再び全画面表示ボタンをクリックすれば元に戻ります。
[1:08] 次のステップはブラウザーのこのウィンドウをスクリーンの左側に動かしてからもう一つのウィンドウを開くことです。 場合によってはウィンドウの大きさを変えるためには最大化ボタンを先に押す必要があるかもしれません。 ウィンドウの幅を動画のプレーヤーの幅に合わせてから、ウインドウをスクリンの左側においてください。 次にブログ・アーカイブを見て「Installing My Spaced Repetition App」を見つけてください。 右クリックしてから、「新しいウィンドウで開く」を選んでください。 次に、先ほど開いたウィンドウ（最初のウィンドウと同じ内容を表示しているはずだ）を右側において、残りのスクリーンを一杯にするように大きさを調整してください。 左側のウィンドウを動画再生に使い、右側のウィンドウを手順を行うために使います。
[2:09] 次、ビデオで聞こえている言葉を二つ目のウィンドウでの探し方を覚えてほしいと思います。 段落で表示されているテキストが見えるまで右側のウィンドウを下へスクロールしてみてください。 それそれの段落のはじめに時間を示す数字がありますね。 次に、動画を一時停止して、探したい時間を確認してください。 それぞれの段落のはじめに表示されている時間を参考に、今私が話しているテキストを見つけてください。 私が今話しているテキストが見えているのであれば、「Kirk Masden’s AppSheet Profile」という文字が見えるはずです。 リンクを右クリックして、「新しいタブで開く」を選んでください。 一般論として、新しいサイトに飛ぶリンクであれば、いざとなって容易に元のページに戻れるようにリンクを新しいタブで開くと良いだろうと思います。
私のAppSheetアプリをコピーする
[2:59] さて、スクリーンの右側にあるウインドウに、私が作ったSpace Repetitionというアプリが見えているはずです。 「See it in action」をクリックしてください。 次は「Copy this app」をクリックしてください。 AppSheetを初めて使っているのであれば、今から利用登録をしなければなりません。 まず、Googleのアイコンをクリックしてください。 私が担当する授業でこのアプリを使うのであれば、「kumagaku.ac.jp」のアドレスで登録を行う必要があります。 私が担当する授業を受けていなければ、どのGoogleアドレスを利用しても結構です。 「Allow」をクリック。
[4:10] さて、もう一度「Copy this app」をクリックしてください。 すでにこのアプリの古いバージョンを持っているのであれば、後で区別ができるように名前を変えると良いと思います。 しかし、初めてダウンロードする場合には、名前を変える必要がありません。 「Skip」をクリック。
[5:20] 「Behavior」をクリック。 次に「Offline & Sync」をクリック。 「Delayed sync」と「Automatic updates」を On にする。 「SAVE CHANGES」をクリック。 次に、「Info」をクリックしてからアプリの「Short name」をコピーしてください。 最後に、「Data」をクリックしてから複数見える「BROWSE」のリンクの一つをクリックしてください。
Google スプレッドシート
[6:32] 「BROWSE」のリンクをクリックすることによって、アプリのデータが入っているGoogleスプレッドシートに飛びました。 私のSpaced Repetitionのアプリを使い始めた段階では、私が準備してあげたデータ（単語、定義、例文など）が入っています。 しかし、これからは好きなようにこのスプレッドシートのデータの追加や削除、訂正などができます。 もう一つの動画でその方法を説明します。
[6:32] 左上の角に「W to D」の文字が見えるはずです。 シートを名前をアプリと同じ名前に変えることをお勧めします。 やり方としては、「W to D」を選択してから先ほどコピーしたアプリ名をペーストします。 私が担当する授業でアプリを使うのであれば、スプレッドシートを私と共有する必要があります。 ウィンドウの右上の角に見えているはずの「共有」をクリックしてください。 次に「masden」アットマーク「kumagaku.ac.jp」を入力してから「送信」をクリックしてください。
スマホで
[6:32] さて、これでいよいよ「AppSheet」のアプリをダウンロードして、その中で私の「Spaced Repetition」というアプリを使ってスマホで単語の勉強を始める準備が整いました。 iPhoneの場合は、「App Store」を開いて、「AppSheet」を検索して、ダウンロードしてください。 私のSpaced Repetitionの場合には写真を加える必要はありませんので、ここで「OK」でも「Don’t Allow」でもいいです。
[6:50] アンドロイドのスマホの場合には「Play Store」をタップして、「AppSheet」を検索して、ダウンロードしてください。 私はここで「ACCEPT」をタップしました。 「ACCEPT」をタップする前に設定を変えても良いかもしれませんが、私自身はまだそれを試していないのでよくわかりません。
[7:11] これからの手順はiPhoneもアンドロイドも一緒です。 アプリを起動して、AppSheet登録をした時に使ったメール・アドレスでログインしてください。 「Allow」をクリック。 初めてAppSheetを使っている場合には、先ほどコピーしたアプリが「App Gallery」に表示されているはずです。 アプリを使い始めるためにはアイコンをタップしてください。
